How to Choose the Right Marketing Partner for Your Small Business

March 25, 2026 · Uncategorized

Back to News

Finding the right marketing partner can feel overwhelming, especially when every agency promises the moon. But as a small business owner, you need more than flashy proposals. You need someone who understands your budget, your market, and your actual goals.

Here are a few things we’ve learned from working with over 150 Montana businesses about what to look for, and what red flags to watch out for.

They Should Ask More Questions Than They Answer

A good partner starts by listening. If an agency leads with their solution before understanding your business, your customers, and your competitive landscape, they’re selling a package, not building a strategy. The first conversation should feel more like a doctor’s visit than a sales pitch.

Look for Local Knowledge

Marketing a plumbing company in the Flathead Valley is fundamentally different from marketing a tech startup in Denver. The channels are different, the customer behavior is different, and the competitive dynamics are different. A partner who understands your specific market will save you months of trial and error.

Check Their Track Record With Businesses Your Size

Big agencies love showing off Fortune 500 case studies. But the strategies that work for a company with a million-dollar marketing budget won’t work for a company spending $2,000 a month. Ask for references from businesses similar to yours, similar size, similar industry, similar market.
