About the Center

What We Do

The Cooperative Development Center helps individuals and communities start, grow, and sustain cooperative businesses. Cooperatives are enterprises owned and democratically controlled by their members, with profits shared equitably among the people who use them.

We've spent over 25 years making that model work in rural western Montana. Whether you're a group of farmers looking to share equipment and markets, a community trying to save a local business, or workers ready to own their workplace, we have the experience to guide you through every step.

Group Facilitation

Structured facilitation for founding groups, helping members build shared vision, surface disagreements early, and arrive at decisions the whole group owns.

Organizational Documentation

Articles of incorporation, bylaws, stock structures, and membership agreements drafted and reviewed for your cooperative's specific model and legal structure.

Business Planning

Feasibility analysis, financial projections, and cooperative business plans that satisfy lenders, grant funders, and prospective members.

Capitalization Strategies

Member equity campaigns, preferred shares, USDA and CDFI loan packages, and grant research, building the capital stack your cooperative needs to launch or grow.

Board Governance Workshops

Half-day and full-day governance training for cooperative boards, fiduciary duties, meeting facilitation, director/manager relationship, and long-term policy development.

Strategic Planning

Multi-year strategic planning facilitation for established cooperatives, setting priorities, aligning the board and management, and building accountability into the plan.

Specialized Referrals

Connections to cooperative-savvy attorneys, HR consultants, accountants, and regional co-op development organizations, so you get the right expertise at the right time.
